wonder

“People travel to wonder

at the height of the mountains,

at the huge waves of the seas,

at the long course of the rivers,

at the vast compass of the ocean,

at the circular motion of the stars,

and yet they pass by themselves

without wondering. ”

Saint Augustine

you are worth wondering about.

Much of the breakdowns in our realtionships and our mental health can be tracked back to a diminished ability to wonder.

We often lose the ability to wonder about ourselves or another with an open mind and heart. This leads us to restricted, rigid, closed off, shame riddled relationships with ourselves and others.

Deep trauma and wounding can also result in our loss of ability to wonder.

Our brains are in such high levels of stress that the capacity to see beauty or wonder with curiosity about a fuller more beautiful and realistic narraitve is far from reach.

We get stuck in past pains and lose sight of the new things that are bursting to break forth.

We forget to wonder about those pains and stories of the past. We forget that the person on the other side of the text convo, dinner table, break up, party line, or argument also has past stories of pain.

We are losing our ability to wonder and be in awe of the magic and wild that is being a human.

The therapy space can be a safe and transformative place to begin to wonder in deeper and openhearted ways about yourself, others, and our world.

so…

i hope that you pass by yourself in the mirror and wonder about the beauty and complexity that exists in the magical soul in front of you.

i hope you wonder at your breath today.

when does it deepen?
when is it shallow and hard to grasp?
why i, wonder, is it this way?

i hope you wonder about your tears today.

what is happening when tears well up in your eyes?
what matters so much to you that it would produce this release?

i hope you you wonder what makes you come alive.

i hope you wonder how you got here and where you are going.

i hope you are awestruck by the stories of strength and peril that you hold in your body.

i hope you look at the sunset someday soon and gasp with its gaze of glory and then close your eyes and remember that glory is in you too.

i hope you see someone today and wonder about them.

i hope you wonder about the child in the room next to you.
the body in the bed next to you.
the co-worker in the office next to you.
the person in line before you.
the person who lives on the other side of town.
the person who voted for the other party.
the person who believes different than you.

i hope you wonder…

what moves them?
what breaks them?
what enlivens them?
what formed them?
what has happened to them?
what galaxy is within them?

do they know they are worth wondering about?

you are worth wondering about.
they are worth wondering about.
we are worth wondering about.
